Disability License Plates & Placards
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) issues parking permits to qualifying persons with disabilities. If you have a permanent or temporary disability, you can apply for a permit that will allow you to park in accessible parking spaces. More information about disability placards, including how to apply for and renew them, is detailed below. A permanent placard (blue placard), with or without a wheelchair symbol license plate. A temporary placard (red placard). NOTE: Any placard or plate application must include a medical professional's certification of your disability. Park in handicapped-accessible parking spaces. Park for a maximum of 24 hours in spaces with time limits. To apply for handicap accessible parking placards or license plates, you must complete an application and have your disability certified by a doctor. The application process varies based on whether you're applying for a permanent or temporary placard. All New Jersey disabled parking placards and license plates expire and must be renewed for continued use.
The expiration date and renewal process depend on the type of placard you have. If you have permanent disabled parking privileges, you must renew your certification every 3 years. Disability placards are free to renew. NOTE: You may also have to renew your vehicle registration in addition to re-certifying your disabled status. A completed Application for Vehicle License Plates and/or Placard for Persons with a Disability (Form SP-41). Medical re-certification on the application form, completed within the last 60 days. A copy of your vehicle registration IF you're re-certifying wheelchair license plates. Temporary placards are valid for up to 6 months. If you need the temporary placard for longer, your doctor can re-certify it once only for a maximum of 6 months. A completed Application for Temporary Placard (Form SP-68). Include your medical certification ON the application. You have to take your recertification in person to the local chief of police (NOT the MVC). If your disability parking placard or license plate is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can apply for a replacement. To replace a permanent New Jersey placard that is lost, stolen, or damaged, you can apply in person at your local NJ MVC office. Proof of the placard's loss, theft, or damage: - A notarized statement explaining that it is lost. A police report if it was stolen.
You can apply for your Tennessee disability placard or plate either by mail or in person. Complete the Application for Disabled Person License Plate, Placard and/or Decal (Form RV-F1310301). Get the form certified and signed by one of the following: - Licensed medical doctor. Physician's assistant or nurse practitioner in practice with a doctor. Christian Science practitioner listed in the Christian Science Journal. Comes free with a disability license plate, distinguished license plate, or if you are a registered vehicle owner. NOTE: License plates are free if you use a wheelchair all of the time. Send or take your application and fees to your local TN county clerk’s office. Disabled veteran license plates for veterans with 100% service-related disability or certain other permanent disabilities. This specialty plate will contain the words "Disabled Veteran", which will be recognized as the disability symbol for that plate. Handicapped veteran plates DO NOT permit the use of disability parking. A temporary disabled placard is valid for 6 months. A permanent disabled placard is valid for 2 years. A disability license plate is valid for 1 year. NOTE: A temporary disability placard can only be renewed 1 time. Complete the Application for Disabled Person License Plate, Placard and/or Decal (Form RV-F1310301). Medical certification is required for renewal of a temporary permit ONLY. To renew your disability license plate or license plate with disability decal, you must renew your vehicle registration. You can renew your placard either by mail or in person to your local Tennessee county clerk. Filling out the Application for Disabled Person License Plate, Placard and/or Decal (Form RV-F1310301). Returning the remaining portion of the placard with your application, if available.
Disabled parking placards and license plates are available to Massachusetts residents with disabilities. You are able to obtain temporary or permanent placards, or a permanent license plate. You can apply for a disability placard or plate from the MA RMV. Once you have your handicapped parking permit, you'll keep it valid through a simple renewal process.
